On Thursday, 23 February 2017, the morning after the National Budget was read in Parliament, Ms Beukes and 7 of our grade 11 Accounting learners attended the Budget Breakfast at the Kelvin Grove in Newlands. The proceedings commenced at 6am. Needless to say, it was an extremely early morning for this lot!
The event was attended by the Finance Minister, his Deputy, Mcebisi Jonas as well as former Minister of Finance Trevor Manuel. The breakfast was broadcast live on Morning Live on SABC 2, hosted by Leeann Manas. It was an amazing opportunity for our school (CHS being one of 3 schools in attendance) and the learners. They were able to rub shoulders with ministers and other corporate entities and listen to debates and questions surrounding the 2017 budget allocation.
We were extremely proud of Uthandile and Ernesto, who gathered the courage to introduce themselves to Trevor Manuel and compliment him on his work in government. Ernesto also mustered up the courage to pose a question, live on television, to Pravin Gordhan. He wanted to know why the Minister predicted an increase in exports for the coming financial year, considering that South Africa is still working towards improving in this area.
The discussions and debates were accompanied by a delicious continental and English breakfast, fit for a king!
“We are extremely grateful that Mr Gibbon supported this opportunity for us. We were given more motivation to work towards becoming future politicians, economists and accountants and contribute towards building our economy and a greater future for our country.” – 11X Accounting learners
